“The hotel is commonly a place of passage, a stopping-off place. In the collective imagination, it’s an otherworldly, extra-ordinary place, an ideal setting for fiction. While cinema and literature have explored its dramatic potential, many artists have also explored the underlying myths it embodies, since the early 19th century. From being a subject for painters, the hotel has become an object of artistic proposals for contemporary artists.

Today, hotels no longer only welcome visitors or visiting artists, they open up their public and private spaces to creation, whether ephemeral or perennial, and join forces with the biggest contemporary art events. Supervues is not part of the latter dynamic, insofar as it is the event, the host par excellence, a small-scale contemporary art venue on a human scale, inscribed in a relationship of proximity. Hoteliers and art lovers, Laurence and Jean-Baptiste Gurly, surrounded themselves with collectors and artists from the outset of this adventure to collectively create a professional, high-quality and convivial event.

The Hotel Burrhus, an atypical hotel in the heart of Vaison-la-Romaine, has 35 rooms, each with its own unique dimensions, furnishings and atmosphere. Since 2007, on the second weekend of December, Hotel Burrhus has invited institutions, art centers, contemporary art venues and galleries to participate in Supervues programming by inviting an artist to occupy one of the hotel’s rooms. Take over a room, selected at random, with works of art, installations designed especially for the event, or even performances. Inhabit it, live for three days among your own creation, in contact with neighboring artists, while mediating your own work for an increasingly curious and numerous public, with nearly 1,200 visitors to the 2013 edition. On the top floor, the “suite” houses a selection of works by a collector. The event is punctuated by highlights (performances, screenings, concerts) and itineraries suggested by long-time partners: collectors, gallery owners, artists. It’s an experience imbued with generosity, where the key words remain sharing and meeting, and artists and visitors are invited to take part”.
