Pelage de lumière, Saint-Jean-Cap Ferra, 2018
We tried to fall asleep underwater.
We tried to fall asleep underwater, the genesis of an underwater odyssey.
Where the Mediterranean coastline is adorned with pebbles polished by millennia of erosion, the beach at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat glistens in slightly green waters colored by underwater vegetation. In September 2017, this natural sanctuary was the epicenter of an extraordinary photographic experience.
At dawn, on a slightly overcast morning, four silhouettes step out onto the sea: Célia, Camille, Evan and Benoit. Beneath their feet, the pebbles roll and creak, while in front of them, a cozy nest of posidonia waits to embrace their forms. It’s in this natural setting that the magic begins. The mission is clear, but not simple: to fall asleep underwater, to melt into this abundant nature, and to reconnect with the often-forgotten aquatic element.
Every movement, every breath becomes a challenge in this quest for harmony. The feel of the pebbles beneath their feet, the cool caress of the green waters, and the gentle murmur of the waves on the surface, all combine to create a total physical and emotional immersion.
In the midst of this marine symphony, a singular sound resounds: trumpets. This musical interlude, though secondary to the first session, foreshadows the project “Il y a comme un lien entre l’eau, la musique et la vie”, Benoit’s future exploration of joy.
Benoit, the instigator of this adventure, was more than just an observer. He lived every moment intensely, on an equal footing with the other participants. It was in this underwater ballet that the idea of the “flying camera” was born: a camera that moves around, witnessing and sharing in the emotions and fleeting moments shared by all.
This first plunge into the unknown paved the way for future adventures. While Marie, with her “Coat of Light” session in Saint John, added another dimension to this mosaic of experiences, Sandy also joined the journey, adding her own touch to this evolving picture.
All this paved the way for an even more ambitious project. In 2021, inspired by these earlier sessions, Benoit gave birth to the “Mythologie Subaquatique” project, renewing his passion for capturing ephemeral moments and human interaction with the immensity of the ocean.
